Could the MG 2 Become WA's Most Affordable Electric Car?

MG has dropped teaser images of a new electric hatchback expected to carry the MG 2 badge, with a formal reveal locked in for the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK on 9 July 2026. If it makes it to Australian shores, it could become the cheapest EV on sale here — which is a big deal for Perth and WA buyers watching their budgets closely.

What We Know So Far

MG's global design chief Jozef Kaban will unveil two concept cars at Goodwood — one is described as a 'design vision', while the other is a confirmed production-bound B-segment (city-sized) EV headed to the UK market in 2027. That second car is what's generating the most interest here.

The MG 2 would sit below the MG 3 — currently MG's smallest Australian model at 4113mm long — and well under the MG 4 Urban hatch at 4395mm. Think compact city runabout rather than proper road-tripper. For most Perth commuters dealing with stop-start traffic on the Mitchell Freeway or the Kwinana, that kind of footprint is genuinely practical.

MG Motor UK's head of product and planning, David Allison, summed up the thinking in 2024: "It's a combination of range, size and price — and if you hit all three, you'll nail it." He pointed to a target price bracket around €20,000 (roughly $32,872 AUD) and confirmed the MG 2 name was on the table.

Why WA Buyers Should Pay Attention

MG Motor Australia hasn't confirmed whether the MG 2 will come here, but the timing and competitive landscape make a strong case for it. The current cheapest EV in Australia is the BYD Atto 1, priced from $23,990 before on-road costs. If the MG 2 lands anywhere near that figure — or below it — it becomes a serious option for WA buyers who've been sitting on the fence about going electric.

WA's fuel prices consistently rank among the highest in the country, which means the running cost argument for EVs is stronger here than in most states. For city driving in Perth, a compact EV with adequate range makes solid financial sense, even before you factor in lower servicing costs.

The MG 2 will also face competition from the Geely EX2, currently the best-selling vehicle in China, which is expected in Australia before the end of 2026. That's a lot of affordable small EVs entering the market in a short window — good news for buyers, not so much for anyone holding out hope that EV prices stay high.

MG's Momentum in Australia

MG isn't coming into this cold. The brand was up 18.4 per cent year-on-year in May 2026, sitting 10th overall in Australian sales and driven largely by the MG ZS SUV. That existing dealer network and brand familiarity in WA matters — servicing and parts availability are real concerns for EV buyers outside the metro area, and MG has more runs on the board locally than most newer Chinese brands.

Small EVs haven't cracked the Australian market the way they have in Europe — Light and Micro segment vehicles across all fuel types made up only around 3 per cent of new car sales in May 2026. But with fuel prices, urban congestion, and cost-of-living pressures all pushing in the same direction, that could change quickly if the price is right.

The full reveal is on 9 July 2026. We'll know more then about specs, range, and whether Australia is in the picture.
