No Amarok R for Australia — But the W600 Is Coming for WA Ute Buyers
Volkswagen has killed hopes of an Amarok R badge, but the Walkinshaw W600 is about to shake up the WA ute market.

If you've been quietly hoping Volkswagen would slap an R badge on the Amarok and go head-to-head with the Ford Ranger Raptor, it's time to let that dream go. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia has made it clear: the R nameplate isn't coming to any ute, full stop.

The R Badge Is Off the Table
Nathan Johnson, brand director at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia, was blunt about it: "That nameplate is for German passenger vehicles. It's synonymous with the passenger vehicle brand."
His position? The R badge is sacred, and putting it on a ute — even a seriously capable one — isn't something Volkswagen is prepared to do. So if you were picturing an Amarok R tearing up the red dirt between Perth and Kalgoorlie, that's not happening.
That said, Volkswagen isn't completely ignoring the performance ute conversation. The upcoming Amarok W600 — developed with Australian tuning house Walkinshaw — does pay homage to the R brand in a few subtle ways. The brakes, sway bar, and shock absorbers are all finished in Lapis Blue, a nod to VW's R heritage without actually using the nameplate.
What the W600 Actually Delivers

The W600 isn't just a sticker kit — Walkinshaw has done proper engineering work on this one. The front sway bar has been removed, a 22mm rear sway bar fitted, and a set of bespoke Koni shock absorbers tuned specifically for the vehicle. For WA buyers who split their time between the freeway and unsealed station tracks, that's a meaningful chassis upgrade.
At launch, the W600 runs a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 producing 184kW and 600Nm — hence the name. That's strong grunt for towing a boat up to Exmouth or hauling gear on a Pilbara work site. Johnson has also hinted that a 2.3-litre turbo-petrol option making 222kW and 452Nm could follow down the track, which would make for an interesting comparison with the Ranger Raptor's 3.0-litre petrol V6.
On the outside, the W600 gets a full body kit, retracting side-steps, a side-exit exhaust, and 20x10-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV tyres. It looks the part.

What This Means for WA Ute Buyers
The WA ute market is competitive and WA buyers are demanding — you need something that works hard during the week and doesn't embarrass you on the weekend. The W600 is positioning itself as a premium performance option that doesn't require a Raptor badge to justify the asking price.
For anyone who's already looked at the standard Amarok range and wanted something with more attitude — and proper suspension tuning to handle corrugated outback roads rather than just look aggressive in a Claremont car park — the W600 deserves serious consideration.
The R nameplate may be off limits, but Volkswagen and Walkinshaw are clearly trying to build something that earns its performance credentials on its own terms. Whether that's enough to sway WA buyers away from the Raptor or the Ram 1500 TRX crowd remains to be seen — but it's a strong opening move.
