The 5 Smallest Cars You Can Buy in WA Right Now

Perth might sprawl like nowhere else on earth, but that doesn't mean bigger is always better when it comes to cars. Whether you're squeezing into a Northbridge car park, crawling through CBD traffic on St Georges Terrace, or just after something cheap to run day-to-day, a small car makes a lot of sense. Here are the five smallest cars currently on sale in WA.

The Budget End: Big Value, Small Footprint

**Kia Picanto** — 3595mm long, 1595mm wide, 1485mm tall

The Picanto is the smallest car you can buy in Australia right now, and at $19,190 drive-away, it's also one of the cheapest. Four doors, five seats, and 255 litres of boot space — modest, but workable for a daily commuter. It's the most popular micro car in the country for good reason: the value is hard to argue with. No EV option exists, and it runs a four-cylinder petrol engine. The ANCAP rating is from 2017, so take that four-star result with a grain of salt by today's standards.

**Suzuki Swift** — 3860mm long, 1735mm wide, 1520mm tall

The Swift has been a favourite on WA roads for years, and the current generation keeps that reputation intact. It's just under 3.9m long, has four doors and five seats, and comes in hybrid or pure petrol form — no full EV, unfortunately. The Sport variant is genuinely fun to drive, which counts for something on a weekend run down to Fremantle or up to the Hills. Prices start at $24,990 drive-away. It scored three stars in its 2024 ANCAP test, which is worth keeping in mind if safety is a priority for you.

The EV Options Worth Considering

**Hyundai Inster** — 3825mm long, 1610mm wide, 1575mm tall

The Inster is a fully electric small SUV with a 360km range — more than enough for most Perth metro driving, and it'll handle a run to Mandurah or Joondalup without stress. Four doors, four seats, and a 351-litre boot make it surprisingly practical. At $39,000, it's one of the more affordable EVs on the market. Four stars from ANCAP. If you're eyeing WA's EV rebates and want something compact and efficient, the Inster deserves serious consideration.

The Premium End: Style Over Substance?

**Mini Cooper (3-door)** — 3858mm long, 1967mm wide, 1460mm tall

The Mini Cooper is the widest car on this list despite being one of the shortest — make of that what you will. The electric version starts at $53,990 and the petrol from $41,990. Five-star ANCAP rating and a genuinely premium feel inside. Four seats and a 210-litre boot mean it's not particularly practical, but if you want something with character and a tight turning circle for inner-city Perth driving, it delivers.

**Fiat 500e** — 3631mm long, 1900mm wide, 1529mm tall

The 500e is the least practical car here — two doors, 185 litres of boot space, and a starting price of $58,900. That's a lot of money for something this small and this limited. It's charming and fun to drive on its electric powertrain, but sales in Australia have been slow and its long-term availability is uncertain. Four stars in safety testing. If you love it, it might actually be worth negotiating hard — dealers know the numbers aren't great.

For most WA buyers, the Picanto and Swift represent the practical sweet spot, while the Inster is the standout if you're ready to go electric. Use AutoReady WA to compare deals from local dealerships and see what's available near you right now.
